Roselia Flores spent 8 years in California before moving to Durham in 1998. She misses her homeland Mexico but loves living in North Carolina. She helps run her family’s business, La Superior.
Roselia Flores pasó 8 años en California antes de mudarse a Durham in 1998. Se echa de menos su país natal México pero le encanta vivir en Carolina del Norte. Ayuda en el manejo de la empresa de su familia, La Superior.
Roselia describes her childhood memories of how her family made money by sewing clothing and that when she was 14 years old she started working at a candy factory even though she very much wanted to attend school. She was happy that she could bring a paycheck home to the family.
Roselia describe unos recuerdos de su niñez de cómo la familia ganó dinero en la preparación de ropa y que cuando tenía 14 años empezó a trabajar en una fábrica de dulces aunque quería más que nada asistir a la escuela. Se sentía alegre de poder llevarle un cheque a la familia.

Roselia describes how she loves to meet people and do the best she can at her job. She knows that if you find the right job for your personality then you will love it.
Roselia describe cuánto le encanta conocer a personas y dar lo mejor en el trabajo. Ella sabe que si uno encuentra el trabajo apropiado para su personalidad entonces le encantará hacer ese trabajo.
In the last 15 years she has seen many positive changes in Durham: more highways, more work. There is great diversity among Latinos / Hispanics in Durham now and she knows that they are a hardworking people. She says that in any group there are good and bad people and she asks for forgiveness for the immigrants that behave badly because they have lost their way while trying to find a better life in the US.
En los úlitmos 15 años ve unos cambios muy positivos en Durham: más carreteras, más trabajo. Hay mucha diversidad de latinos / hispanos ahora en Durham y sabe que hay gente muy trabajadora. Dice que en cualquier grupo hay gente buena y gente mala y pide disculpas por los inmigrantes que no se comportan bien porque se han perdido en el camino de buscar una mejor vida en los EEUU.
She knows how to speak and write basic English but would like to learn more. She says that it is the responsibility of immigrants to learn English. She has prioritized raising her children, being a wife, and her work and although she doesn’t want to give excuses, she has not had time to study. She has been able to communicate with teachers and doctors through gestures and basic English. She believes that with humility and intelligence that a person with limited English can get along pretty well in Durham.
Sabe hablar y escribir un inglés básico pero le gustaría aprender más. Dice que es la responsabilidad de los inmigrantes para aprender el inglés. Ha dado prioridad a la crianza de sus hijos, a ser esposa y a su trabajo y aunque no quiere ofrecer esto como excusa, no ha tenido tiempo para estudiar. Ha podido comunicarse con maestros y médicos con señas y su inglés básico. Cree que con la humildad y la inteligenica una persona con el inglés limitado puede manejarse bastante bien en Durham.
Roselia is worried about the future of immigrant youth and asks for help in supporting latino youth. They lose a lot in the move to the US and they can become aggressive or depressed as a result. She invites us to look for ways to support the youth in their studies, learning sports, and participating in the arts so that we ensure a positive future.
Roselia está preocupada por el futuro de los jóvenes inmigrantes y pide ayuda en apoyar a los jóvenes latinos. Pierden mucho en el traslado a los EEUU y pueden ponerse agresivos o deprimidos como resultado. Nos invita a buscar modos de apoyar a los jóvenes en estudiar, aprender deportes y participar en artes para asegurar un futuro positivo.
