Rebecca’s family has lived in the southwest US (originally Mexican territory) for four generations. She moved to North Carolina in 1984 to study and work. She opened Latino Health Services in 2000 and has seen great change in services provided at Duke Hospital for the immigrant community.

La familia de Rebecca ha vivido en el sudoeste de los EEUU (originalmente en territorio mexicano) por cuatro generaciones. Se mudó a Carolina del Norte en 1984 para estudiar y trabajar. Abrió los Latino Health Services en 2000 y ha visto muchas cambios en los servicios proveídos en el hospital de Duke para la comunidad inmigrante.

Rebecca explains how the migration patterns have shifted from single men arriving in NC to now families. The changes in exercise and diet that have resulted from migration have negatively impacted the health of the Latino/a community. There is a great desire within the Latino/a community to become more educated and to learn English.

Rebecca explica cómo los patrones migratorios han cambiado de varones individuales llegando en Carolina del Norte a familias ahora. Los cambios en el ejercicio y la dieta que han resultado de la migración han tenido un impacto negativo en la salud de la comunidad latina. Hay un gran deseo de la comunidad latina de educarse y de aprender el inglés.

Rebecca believes that more interpreters and better communication are key to learning about and from each other.

El Centro Hispano has educated Rebecca quite a bit about the needs of the Latino/a community and she knows that El Centro Hispano is a rich resource for the community.

Rebecca reflects on the big changes that she has witnessed in Durham over the years and hopes that the increased interest that we see now will allow us to continue to learn from the Latino/a community
