This is my new “personal” blog, not to be confused with my professional blog which can be found here.
On this blog I’m chronically my journey to become a Jew while living in the bible-belt South.
The short story, which will be elaborated in later posts, is that I married a gastronomic Jew in a secular wedding ceremony in the northeast. Neither of us was religious and the topic rarely came up during our courtship, except to the extent that we pondered the craziness of the fundamentalist Christian right.
But then we moved to the South–Raleigh, NC to be precise. And we decided to start a family. So suddenly we were surrounded by people who identified quite strongly with their religion and we began to think about what of our various family religious ideals and traditions we wanted to pass on to our kids.
We enrolled in the local “Introduction to Judaism” class just to get of sense of what Judaism was really all about. (Remember my husband basically only knew about the food!) And the journey began.
The posts here will not tell the story from start to finish in a linear fashion. But over time I hope to fill in the journey. I hope others will be interested too. Perhaps those contemplating their own religious journey. Or those who know me and exclaimed about my Facebook posts “wait, she is Jewish?”
