Hello!
First, I’d like to thank everyone who came out to the interest lunch during Grad Student Appreciation Week. Your feedback and enthusiasm were so encouraging. It was a productive lunch, and it’s clear that there is a great need for Hurston-James on campus. With that in mind, there are a few updates below.

1. Interest Lunch Follow-Up Meeting
Before everyone leaves for summer, I’d like to call a meeting to follow up on our interest lunch. I’m thinking that the last week of April might work. If you are interested in attending, please use the Doodle poll herehttp://www.doodle.com/8t93vbe78pudtd2x to let me know what times will/won’t work for you. I’ll do my best to set up a meeting time that accommodates as many people as possible. If there are times not listed on the poll that work for you, just email me. (For example 5:30-6:30 instead of 5:00-6:00.)
Primary agenda points will be (not necessarily in this order)
a. Deciding upon co-coordinator positions for 2012-2013
b. Putting together a rudimentary event/meeting calendar for 2012-2013
c. Discussing a plan of action for the topics brought up during the interest lunch
Hope to see you there! If you have questions or suggestions for the meeting, contact me at duke.hjsociety@gmail.com.
2. BGPSA Career Planning Workshop: “Careers in Bloom”
The Black Graduate & Professional Student Association (BGPSA) is partnering with Dara Wilson-Grant to present a truly innovative career planning workshop. Her mission is to help individuals develop a framework for sound decision-making and career planning while also helping them to develop the skills required for a lifetime of professional success. This is a brand new hybrid interactive workshop which will help you gain new perspectives on the skills you have been acquiring as graduate students and develop methods for presenting those skills to others. Wilson-Grant’s specialty is working with postdoctoral scholars and mid-career professionals in transition.
Date: Friday, April 13, 2012,
Time: 2:00-5:00pm
Location: Old Trinity Room, West Union Building
No registration required. Just Show Up! For more information, contact BGPSA Social Chair: Reginald.Patterson@duke.edu.
3. Full Frame Documentary Film Festival
What humanities student doesn’t love documentaries? Grab some friends and check out Full Frame. If anyone is interested in getting a bunch of Hurston-James folks together for the festival (and perhaps dinner afterward), we can definitely organize that!
Info on the festival here: http://www.fullframefest.org/
4. Black Feminist Filmmaking: The Early Works of Cheryl Dunye
There is a really interesting panel on Thursday, April 19 at the FHI on Black feminist films.
Spread the word & check it out: http://blogs.library.duke.edu/rubenstein/2012/04/11/black-feminist-filmmaking-the-early-works-of-cheryl-dunye/
5. Duke Libraries Exhibit: From Blackface to Blaxploitation
Our library has a new exhibit that seems to coincide well with the Cheryl Dunye panel above.
