Select the Supply Chain: This project involved a multi-institutional collaboration to conduct a supply chain analysis for RUTF in the Horn of Africa. The project was designed to examine the existing supply chain for RUTF and to assess efficiency in the system. The analysis puts forward recommendations for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the supply chain. The project also serves as a model of how such an analysis might be replicated in other regions or applied to examine the supply chain of other nutritional products.
Identify and articulate the needs of the end customer: The project team worked with project partners to gain a better understanding of the supply chain (through qualitative interviews andsecondary data analysis) in order to identify its strengths and shortcomings. This process is described in more detail in the Stakeholder feedback sections. Through a series of interviews and meetings, the project team identified the key challenges facing the supply chain partners, and used this information to inform analyses.
Outline the goals of the project: The objectives of this project were fourfold:
- To develop shared understanding of RUTF supply chain among UNICEF divisions and partner organizations, including suppliers, freight forwarders, and NGOs. This shared understanding will provide more transparency to the system and allow each party to make decisions and conduct their responsibilities more effectively.
- Identify risks that could disrupt RUTF supply chain. By identifying potential disruptions in terms of lack of capacity, lack of funding and large unplanned increases in demand, UNICEF can use scenario planning tools to develop risk mitigation strategies.
- Develop a methodology and guideline for the analysis and improvement of a nutrition product supply chain, which can be effectively used by other humanitarian organizations
