Art Installation Inspired by the Book Eating Animals
Opening Thursday, August 18 (On display until October 16, 2011)
For the first time, the Nasher Museum is collaborating with Duke Summer Reading and Duke Reads Online Book Club. An installation in the museum’s education gallery presents more than 30 works relating to Jonathan Safran Foer’s book Eating Animals. The installation will challenge visitors–whether carnivores, omnivores, vegetarians or vegans–to think about what eating meat means to them. It includes works in a variety of media spanning more than 2,000 years. Visit this website for more information.
Eating Animals Summer Reading Event

Hear from Jonathan Safran Foer, author of the first-year summer reading book Eating Animals. The event will take place twice, from 10 a.m.- Noon and from 2-4 p.m. in Page Auditorium.
InterFaith Food Shuttle Truck Donations
Sunday, September 18
An InterFaith Food Shuttle truck will be parked in front of the Chapel from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Donations will go to the BackPack Buddies program, which sends eligible children home each weekend with a backpack filled with enough food for that child for the weekend (6 balanced meals and 2 healthy snacks). Please bring your food donations to the truck. Types of items needed are “single serving” sized meats and stews, breakfast items, packaged noodles, canned vegetables and fruit, 100% juice boxes, shelf stable boxed unflavored milk, and healthy snacks. Please bring only shelf stable items. Do not bring sugary cereals or snacks such as pop-tarts and cookies, Spam and Vienna sausages, candy, juice pouches, or soft top applesauce, fruit, Jello or fish. Chef Baron Seaver and Sustainable Food Fair

At 6 p.m. in Love Auditorium, room B101 in the LSRC, author and chef Barton Seaver will speak on the topic “Delicious Is the New Environmentalism.” Barton Seaver is a chef and seafood expert who promotes sustainable seafood practices through “ocean-friendly substitutes that are healthy, sustainable, and just as delicious as your current favorites.” Learn how environmental issues translate through the lens of dinner into everyday cultural concerns such as health, jobs and community. There will be a Q & A and book signing following the talk.
This free, public event will be followed by a ‘Sustainable Food Fair’. Featured at the event will be Duke and local triangle restaurants which will be using local, sustainable ingredients. Space is limited. RSVP for the event and find more details.

Eat Local Challenge

Once a year, Bon Appetit Management Company issues an “Eat Local Challenge” to all of our chefs. On Tuesday, September 27, come to the Great Hall, Marketplace, or Fuqua’s Fox Cafe and enjoy a lunch that is made completely of ingredients from within a 150 mile radius of the cafe. This act, while seemingly simple, has far reaching implications on flavor, community and the environment.
“Barn Raising” at the Duke Campus Farm

The Duke Campus Farm is participating in Food Week by hosting a “barn raising” from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Volunteers will help the farm build its first hoop house (a type of greenhouse used to grow crops in the winter). Lots of hands are needed and for this good time with great people! Lunch will be provided – and sponsored by Chipotle! The farm is located at 5082 Friends School Rd in Durham, directly across the street from Carolina Friends School in the Duke Forest.
“King Corn” Screening with Filmmaker Ian Cheney

Join Farmhand on October 3rd at 7 p.m. in Love Auditorium (LSRC) for a movie showing of “King Corn” with filmmaker Ian Cheney. Watch the trailer. Ian Cheney is a talented documentary filmmaker and advocate of sustainable food systems. Ian is one of the Co-founders of Food Corps, and founder of the documentary advocacy group “Wicked Delicate.” His movie “King Corn,” a documentary about “two friends, one acre of corn, and a subsidized crop that drives a large part of our nation’s food system,” recently won a Peabody Award. Please come join us for this exciting and informative event. Before the event, a reception will be hosted in the Hall of Science in front of Love Auditorium at 6:15 p.m. Local food snacks and beer will be provided. After the film, Ian will give a brief talk about his film and open the floor to Q & A.

At 8:30 p.m. in the Great Hall attend a townhall-style meeting between Duke administration and students to discuss the future of food at Duke. A Biblical Perspective on UMC Support of Farmworker Organizing

From Noon to 1 p.m. in 0015 Westbrook, David Wildman, the Executive Secretary of Human Rights & Racial Justice in the UMC’s General Board of Global Ministries and a member of the board of the National Farm Worker Ministry, will present and discuss theological perspectives that motivate the United Methodist Church’s support of farmworker organizing. Topics covered will include immigration, the place of farm workers in the US food system, and the rights of workers to organize. Refreshments will be served. RSVP to the Facebook event. Duke Campus Farm Fall Harvest Festival

Come out to celebrate local and organic produce at the Duke Campus Farm‘s Fall Harvest Festival from 2-5 p.m. Free food will be served, made with ingredients from the farm. Meatless Monday Potluck

The Nicholas School will have its next Meatless Monday event on Monday, October 24 from 3 to 4 p.m. in A148 LSRC. Attendees are asked to bring a meat-free snack or dessert to share. The theme of this is event is “Let’s Talk About Fish.” Prof. Marty Smith will lead an informal discussion of issues surrounding the fishing industry and why these issues are relevant to our food choices. This event is primarily aimed at the Nicholas School community, but guests from other departments at Duke may attend. RSVP to: email@example.com if you would like to attend.
