It's a memorable video! "The web is what you make of it" is kind of an open and ambiguous statement, though, isn't it? I mean, is Gaga creating more dialogue, or just more fans/consumers, or some combination of both?

You know, I had actually read this piece and then forgot about it!—but I agree with you: Gopnik is a smart and entertaining writer. I particularly admire the start of the essay, in which he points out that Harry Potter somehow exists in a pre-digital world. It's one of those comments that, once made, seems utterly obvious, but yet points to something I hadn't noticed before.

I tend to favor the Ever-Was side of things myself. You?

Thanks, Allison. What do you think of a wiki as a class project? I shied away from it because I get the sense that students often resent group projects imposed from the top down, but it certainly is one of the distinctive forms of digital writing.

Some interesting videos, Mollie, thanks! (Although I wish you were able to name them in your post.) I guess my question would be: Are the social media empowering consumers, or manipulating them?

I thought this was an interesting talk, with a hopeful conclusion but all sorts of worries and warnings along the way. I'm intrigued by the ideas of "ambient intimacy" and "panic architecture," and it's interesting that she has pretty much the same concern about a loss of solitude that we all disliked so much in the Digital Divide!

This sounds like a great conference. But here's an irony—in this supposedly hyper-connected I had no idea until I just read your post that this event was taking place. Even the Duke Today piece is dated the day of of the conference. Doesn't give folks much lead time.

It's also interesting how 2.0 has become a kind of meme or metaphor in its own right.

Isn't Andrew Keen the guy we all loved to hate in The Digital Divide? I hate to sound clueless, but what does 3.0 offer that 2.0 doesn't? The failure of Google+ seems interesting (remember Google Wave as well?), but I'm not sure where it points us.

I'm not trying to be critical—I get the problems with Google, but I'm not sure what the next steps are (rumored to be).
