project proposal

(I apologize, I thought this was due by Tuesday at 9am.)

Subject and slant: What do you want to write about? What argument do you want to make about, or perspective do you want to bring to, this topic?

I want to write about the role of journalism in light of digital media, the Internet, and changing perceptions of what a journalist does and who can become a journalist. My perspective will be that of a student about to graduate college and enter journalism school in pursuit of a Master’s degree. Without fully researching the topic, I do not know what my slant will be, but I think now that though anyone has the capacity to become a journalist, that not everyone has the ability to become a journalist. The Internet has increased accessibility, allowing people to more easily publish their work, but I do not think that every blog post, video, or photograph on the Internet warrants the designation of journalism.

Format: What will be the final form of your work? (Tumblr site, Prezi, YouTube video, iBook Author, etc.) Why is this an apt format for the kind of text you want to produce?

Right now, I’m leaning toward using an iBook for my project. I’ve been working with iBook for my capstone project as well, so I’m familiar with the program. I’m not totally set on this however, I think I’ll let the material I gather influence the medium.

Materials: What sort of research will your essay be based on? (Personal experiences, field notes, interviews, other texts?) Try to list at least four or five texts, persons, or events you know you will draw on.

I think my research will based on numerous things including: personal experiences, interviews, articles and other texts, and compiled data. I wrote an essay for my journalism school app to Northwestern addressing this issue, which I am planning to expand in this essay. I will use those sources, other articles I have collected on the issue. I also plan to interview people currently working in journalism. I will take info from bloggers as well as newspapers and online news sources to provide opinions in the field on the future of journalism.

Questions: How can I help you at this point?

Umm, not that I can think of at the moment. If I have a question, I’ll be sure to ask.

Digital Essay: What digital products are trying to sell us

▪ Subject and slant: While at home this past weekend, I had access to cable TV for the first time in a few months. Usually I watch my shows online, but with the traditional TV set I began to take notice of commercials that advertised cellphones, tablets, and computers. They made me a little uncomfortable. These commercials all seemed to suggest a special type of intimacy and dependence between the user and the digital product, and I thought it would be interesting to examine these commercials more closely and reflect on what it means for our society. I want to frame the argument by showing the commercial, then posing a question like, “Is the instantaneity of 4g so necessary?” and incorporating my own thoughts and research. Ultimately I hope to answer what exactly are the companies trying to sell us on when they sell us an iPad or an Android.

▪ Format: I want to use iMovie to make a video, as I feel this is the easiest way to incorporate stillframes with moving frames and text in a linear fashion that tells a story. Because so much of the essay will be visual and incorporate commercials, I hope that the iMovie format will allow the text to support the images and videos instead of vice versa.

▪  Materials: My essay will be based primarily on the commercials themselves, which I hope to be able to take from Youtube or company sites. I will also be using my own opinion, opinions of friends, news articles that discuss the issues at hand, and company press releases and websites.

▪ Questions: I’m still deciding between this project and the Portuguese program one. I think this one would be the easiest to make from a logistical standpoint, but I don’t know what type of rights I would need to use the commercials in my digital essay. I also may need richer materials to make the research truly probing, and would appreciate any guidance in that respect.

Digital Essay: FEMMES at Duke

Subject and slant: I have been involved with FEMMES (Females Excelling More in Math, Engineering, and Science) since my sophomore year at Duke. I’m in charge of the program this year and we’ve been having some problems with our current website. I’d like to use this project as a way to create a new site for our organization. The goal of this essay is to inform people, both parents of participants (we work with 4th-6th grade girls) and students at Duke who want to get involved, about what we do and who we are.

Format: I think I’m going to create a Prezi. This will be useful because the information I’d like to present isn’t going to be presented in a linear way. There will be certain areas to go to if you’re a student and different areas if you’re a parent.

Materials: I’d like this site to be full of a lot of media to make it really engaging to those who visit. I plan to record myself talking a bit about the organization and my journey with it as well as a few other executive board members about their experiences. Additionally, I’ve interviewed a few of the girls during experiments to demonstrate what types of activities we work on and what they’re learning about. (Don’t worry – there’s a clause in the legal release their parents sign that says we could take pictures / videos of them and put them online for the purposes of advertising our organization!)

Questions: At this point, I’m mostly worried about how I could make my work a true “essay.” I see in my head more as different sections of information and am trying to figure out how I could make it more creative and engaging, as well as how to make it have more of a flow. Maybe I could have a section of some anecdotes or something? I also need to play around with Prezi more and figure out if/how I could post documents (i.e. registration forms) to be downloaded to make the site useful for parents.

Digital Essay Proposal

Subject and Slant: For my digital essay I want to focus on Bruce Springsteen. My entire extended family is a group of Springsteen fanatics and I was constantly surrounded by the Boss’s music growing up. The summer before my senior year in high school, this obsession led me on adventure to Springsteen’s house which eventually became the basis of my college essay. I want to focus on the way in which Springsteen’s music has inspired and affected others like myself.

Format: I want to use YouTube as the format for my project. I think a YouTube video will work well because I will be including pictures, video clips and text. I have worked with iMovie before and originally wanted to use this as the format for my project but am not sure how much text I would be able to incorporate through iMovie. Ideally I would want to use a combination of iMovie and YouTube but this is something I will be working on

Materials: My uncle is close friends with the “B-Street Band” (a Springsteen cover band) and I want to interview some of the band to gain their perspective about what is so powerful about Springsteen’s music. I will also be going to a Springsteen concert on April 1st in DC and will include video clips. I think it would be interesting to interview a variety of people and ask them what their favorite Springsteen song is and why. I also want to include pieces of my college essay and my own personal experience when I met the Boss himself.

Questions: I want to make sure that my “argument”/ approach on Springsteen is specific and doesn’t come off as a biographical piece.

Digital Essay Proposal: Portuguese at Duke and beyond

Subject and slant: In my time at Duke, one of the subjects outside of my major and minor that I spent a lot of time studying was Portuguese. It was really unique to be part of such a small program, with the same students enrolling in many of the same classes over a few semesters and a professor who single-handedly led the program. I want my essay to incorporate the Portuguese program at Duke, why the language is useful to learn, and tie in my experience in Rio de Janeiro as how one takes a language learned in a classroom and puts it into practice. I was thinking about talking to the professor, Magda, to see if it might be something she would want to use in the future.

Format: For the essay, I want to use iMovie to make a video, as I feel this is the easiest way to interweave still frames, moving frames, text in a linear fashion that tells a story. iMovie is probably one of the easiest ways to incorporate video interviews as more than just something to click on. Because so much of the essay will be visual, I hope that the iMovie format will allow the text to support the images and videos instead of vice versa.

Materials: My essay will be based on my own personal experience, interviews with classmates and students in the program now, news articles on the importance of Brazil and the language, and official advertisements and commercials for the Olympics and World Cup that will be held in Rio de Janeiro. I’ve also requested permission from Magda to film a class session, as well as a “Bate-Papo Brazil” meeting, which is the unofficial club she holds every week.

Questions: I still need to put a little more thought into how I’m going to tie in all the subjects together. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Digital Essay Proposal: What is writing, and why?

Subject and slant: I will spend the pages of my digital essay examinining writing from several different perspectives.I will spend the majority of my time examining, in greater depth where applicable, the interviews I compiled on high school students, and supplementing these with relevant literacy and educational theory. In addition to these interviews and the corresponding commentary, I will (have the hubris to) interview myself, documenting my experiences with writing (as a high school, college, and soon-to-be graduate school graduate) as well as my experiences a published poet and English teacher. I think the juxtaposition of these perspectives will shed considerable light on writing as a process, and as a skill. Finally, i will look to examine writing as a passion, I will spend time considering the perspectives, beliefs and habits of “established” and potentially well known writers. Ultimately, I want to document the process, the problems the ambitions, the aggravations of writing.

Format and Materials: Im not entirely sure, yet, what the final form of my essay will be. I intend for it to be text heavy; I will spend much of my time theorizing and exploring, complicating and problematizing my own, students’ and established writers’ perspectives on and beliefs about writing. Within and between this text, I will splice and supplement with the video of students interviews themselves, audio and audio (if accessible and applicable) from other writers, as well as links to or copies of my own writing (if hubris swells large enough, that is).

Questions: Someone who knows the internet: please (read: pleeeeeezz) tell me what format might serve me best. That was more of a demand, I know. for a real question, I have but one: do you think this will be worth reading? Following that: I know I will enjoy writing about writing, and even more than that, thinking about thinking about writing about writing (meta meta writing; win.), but who would my readership be, if they even exist? Is that as valid a question when writing a digital essay as when brainstorming a blog?

Proposal: Golden, Silver, Bronze and Adamantium: A Journey Through the History of Comics

Subject/Slant: A product of my current blog, my digital essay will examine the key changes of comics through the ages. I will not only define and explain the essential parts of each age, but I will also take a look at the issues each age addresses, the innovations in drawing and print, and the fluctuating focus from art to writing. The digital essay will show how cheap Boy’s Adventure Magazines that were used to clean windows or stoke a fire as often as–if not more than–they were read have become both a respected literary medium and a lucrative industry.

Format: Because my essay will survey the major periods in comic book history, I think a VuVox collage will work well for topic.

Materials: I aim to incorporate information from the few books on the historiography of comics, interviews from well-known creators such as Stan Lee, Alan Moore, Dwayne McDuffie, and Gail Simone, and short clips from animated and live action adaptations. Beyond the textual, my interactive focus will be the visual/video.

Questions: In my mind, my current blog and my essay are very different entities; however, I know I cannot truly explore the history of comics without acknowledging the presence (or lack thereof) of racial, social, sexual, and gender minorities. Aside from limiting the amount of space I give to these specific communities, what other ways can I make my essay different from my blog (aside from not writing about comics, although I am thinking I could do a similar essay about video games)?

Digital Essay Proposal

Subject/Slant: A lot of people, particularly adults, think that political comedies such as Colbert Report and the Daily Show offer no real contributions to society besides humor. But I personally get all of my political updates and new stories for such shows, and they have a huge impact on the way I think. My digital essay will focus on how these shows (primarily Colbert Report) are actually positively changing the political landscape (ie focusing attention on Super PACs) and also providing perspective on political news that normal shows (CNN, Fox News) cannot.

Format: My digital essay will probably be in either Tumblr or PowerPoint form, whichever allows me to embed and include media clips and news articles the easiest.

Materials: My research and material will primarily come from clips of the Colbert Report and possibly the Daily Show. I will also want to include links to articles discussing points raised in these shows. I might also include some interviews on how peers see these shows as.

Questions: Should I focus specifically on the Colbert Report, or should I include the Daily Show as well? Also, I know we talked about certain copyright issues, but do you think these will likely be pressing concerns?

Project Proposal

Subject/Slant:  Horseback riding is one of the most important things in my life, but I often come across people who really don’t understand my sport one bit. A lot of them think it’s just a huge money drain, and why should I pay a trainer when all I have to do is sit on top of my horse looking pretty? I think people underestimate how gritty, challenging, and honest the equestrian sport can be. I want my essay to be a more genuine take on riding from someone who chooses to spend most of her time doing it – why it can be so hard, why it requires so much dedication, and the countless reasons most riders would never want to do anything else.

Format:  My essay might flow well as a VuVox collage, since – even though I originally wanted to do a Prezi – I think it’s going to end up being a pretty linear story, but I still want to incorporate some sense of movement through the text (meaning I don’t want to do a PowerPoint). I think it will be a little more poetic that way. I also know I want to use a lot of still photos, which is easy to do in VuVox.

Materials:  I plan on drawing mostly from personal experience, including images of (and ideas from) my horse, the barn where he is boarded, and my coach’s barn where the Duke team rides. Some of the riders on my team, including myself, are going to intercollegiate regionals next weekend, so I know there will be plenty of things going on there that I can use.

Questions:  Do you think this essay would be more interesting if it were more tailored to my personal experiences, or should it be more about the horse world at large?

Digital Essay Proposal

Subject/Slant: The subject of my digital essay will be the Urban Ministries Soup Kitchen of Durham, North Carolina. I volunteer with this organization several times a week and so when I thought of how my essay could serve a greater purpose, I thought of sharing the message of this philanthropic group through the work that they do and the people they serve. It will be informative and inspirational, I hope.

Format: I want to create a video because I have never made one before and because I think it will best be able to encompass all that I wish to convey. The message is a lot about the experience, seeing and hearing the people that work there and the people these volunteers work with. They need to feel like real people and the problems need to feel like real problems so visualizing it would be the best way. I want to superimpose words and maybe interviews with the people in charge. I can incorporate music and well as stand-still images in a mixed media video.

Materials: I want to start by researching the history and mission more in depth and then aggregating video clips of their breakfast, lunch and dinner shifts as well as the classes offered, the shelter services and the other special events. I will record interviews with people in charge and gather sound bites from the people that are served. For the people in charge, there will be a video with their voices of them but for the workers and the people served, I want to convey an idea of anonymity as well as “it could be you” mentality so their voices will be accompanied by pictures or information tidbits.

Questions: I want to know whether or not having a sort of an essay would be the best way to do this if I should try and encompass the information I am trying to relay by telling the story of either a worker or an inhabitant of the shelter?
