As a Duke class of 2010 graduate in Biomedical Engineering, I was hired on at the analyst level.  From the day I first stepped into the office, I have felt like part of the team.  Analysts carry responsibility immediately upon the completion of training, and employees from all levels contribute ideas to the formation of strategy.  The work is challenging and diverse.  I also enjoy the focus on the healthcare industry. Activities range from team meetings to computer model development to interaction with clients and research participants.  The culture at Putnam is excellent.  While it is very professional and professional dress is expected, the fact that analysts and associates make up almost half the company creates a fun, collegial environment.  Once I met the people, I was no longer nervous about starting a new job as I instantly felt accepted and have made great friends through work.

Two years later, I have now been promoted to the Senior Associate Consultant position, which gives me the opportunity to manage Analysts and Associate Consultants on my team. You will find that having the opportunity to gain management skills is typically rare this soon after graduation, and this makes Putnam an ideal choice for a career that prepares you for the top business schools.

Putnam allows for both professional and personal development.  While we have been ranked in the top 50 Consulting firms by Vault.com for a number of years, we also rank in the top 10 for “Quality of Life”.  We work hard, but the company also stresses work/life balance.

FEMMES is an educational outreach program that sends volunteers out to local Durham schools to lead 4th-6th grade girls through hands-on science activities.  Help out once a week with the afterschool program, once in the spring at our capstone all-day event on campus, or over the summer for our weeklong summer camp. All majors are welcome! For girls only!

First up is the activities fair THIS Friday!  We are still in need of some volunteers to help us table at the Activities Fair this Friday.   Please sign up for 30 minute shifts using the Google Doc sent out in this week’s digest.  Volunteers will receive a free “I <3 SWE” shirt to wear during their shift!  If you sign up and do not already own a shirt, please email Cheryl at cjl35@duke.edu with your shirt size.  If you did not receive an email with the weekly digest, but would like to, please email Lucy at lcd15@duke.edu.

Following the activities fair on Friday, SWE will be kicking off the year with our annual dinner to welcome freshmen.  All are welcome to come join SWE and the class of 2016!  This is a great chance to meet up with all of your favorite SWEeties and to meet all of our newest additions.  Meet at the Blackwell Arch directly after the Activities Fair (6:15PM), and everyone will walk over to grab dinner together on Ninth Street.  Depending on the size of the group, we’ll split off into two groups for dinner: Elmo’s and Bali Hai.

And last but certainly not least, our first GBM will take place on Monday, September 3 from 6-7PM in Soc Psych 129.  Please join us to welcome our new members and meet the newest Executive Board and stay for our annual SWEet Tooth Social where you can stay and meet your SWE Buddy after a long summer!  There will be Free Food AND Free T-Shirts! <3

Where is Soc Psych?  Soc Psych building is on the main quad. Take a right when facing the chapel and then stay on the right side of the quad. Soc Psych is the last building on the right before the quad dead-ends at the Duke Hospital/Medical School.
