Samantha

Samantha TropperAhlan, my name is Samantha Tropper. I’m a rising junior from Denver, Colorado. I’m an International Comparative Studies major with a concentration in the Middle East, and a French double major, and my minor is Arabic. I’ve been super interested in the Middle East for a while and I’m hoping to use my language skills in the future by working in or with the Middle East on international relations. After graduation, the goal is the Peace Corps (fingers crossed!) since I love volunteering so much. Until then, I am enjoying the tremendous classes and opportunities I have at Duke! Thanks for reading the DE Cairo blog!

Veronika

Hello! As you’ve probably seen already my name is Veronika and I’m a rising junior from Texas, double majoring in Asian & Middle Eastern Studies and International Comparative Studies. I feel incredibly lucky to be in Egypt this summer, and can’t wait to see what Cairo throws at us!

Madeline

Hello, I’m Madeline. Madleen in Arabic. I’ll be a sophomore this coming fall. I plan to major in Linguistics and either Asian and Middle Eastern Studies or Slavic and Eurasian Studies. I love languages and the only way to truly learn a language is to immerse oneself in the culture. I hope my DukeEngage experience will be challenging and rewarding and I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences in Cairo with my community in the States.

Emily

Hi, my name is Emily Bates. I will be a junior this coming fall at Duke. I am studying Asian and Middle Eastern studies with a concentration in Arabic, along with biology and chemistry minors in the hopes of entering medical school after graduating from Duke. I hope to enjoy my time in Cairo and learn more about Arab culture along the way. Our work with the partner organizations here will hopefully allow me to learn more about myself as well.

Jonathan

I am from Spokane, Washington and have studied Arabic at Duke for the past year. I hope to major in either Asian Middle Eastern Studies or Intercultural studies. I love learning about other cultures and after Duke Engage Cairo, I hope to study abroad in another Middle Eastern Country during my Junior year at Duke.

Blake

Born in Belgium and raised in Florida, I’m currently a Sophomore at Duke University studying Physics, Arabic, and Markets & Management. See my personal blog for the summer at http://bhamsummer2011.blogspot.com/

Ming

Hi! My full name can be quite a mouthful (Ming Jiu), so I just go by Ming; I respond to mingles, and for that matter, mingy, mingleberry, ming-a-ling as well! I’m a rising senior from Singapore, majoring in Environmental Engineering, and trying to take as many Arabic classes as I can before I graduate next May. I’m looking forward to my time in Cairo, working with the partner organizations and brushing up on Arabic, while enjoying the daily surprises this vibrant city throws at us.

Sabrina Darwiche

Hey blog world! My name is Sabrina (Wahid) Darwiche, not to be confused with Sabrina (One). I’m a rising junior majoring in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies with a concentration in Arabic. I also like to spend my time cramming in pre-med classes and completing the global health certificate. I cannot wait to spend the summer learning as much as I can from the organizations we will be working with and the always exciting people of Egypt.

Michael

I’m a rising junior majoring in Political Theory and (maybe) Arabic. I’m a midshipman in Duke’s NROTC program, though I try not to let that paint a complete picture of who I am. I also fancy myself something of an art and literature buff and play Neopets far more than any grown person should feel comfortable admitting. I like eggs and adventures.

Erica

My name is Erica Nagi and I am a rising Senior with an Interdepartmental Major in The Languages and Cultures of the Arab and Francophone World. I love learning languages, traveling to new places, exploring the culture and interacting with people so this summer is such an exciting opportunity. We are some of the lucky few Americans in Cairo this summer, witnessing history in the making and hopefully making the best of the experience.

Sabrina Rubakovic

My name is Sabrina Rubakovic and I am a rising junior majoring in Arabic and Political Science. I am passionate about being immersed in different societies and learning as much as I can from them–that said, DukeEngage Cairo is the perfect program for my summer.
