On Monday, Nov. 17, Lori Pickens, MHA, was appointed administrator for the Duke Cancer Institute and vice president of Oncology Services for Duke University Health System (DUHS). Pickens had been serving as an interim in both roles since July 1.

“I am delighted to have Lori now formally in the role of DCI administrator,” said Michael B. Kastan, MD, PhD, executive director of the DCI. “I invite faculty and staff to join me in welcoming and congratulating Lori.”

Pickens joined DUHS in June of 2007 as director, Oncology Services for the Duke Raleigh Cancer Center at Duke Raleigh Hospital, and subsequently served as administrative director for the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center. In 2012 she assumed the role of assistant vice president, Clinical Programs.

Before coming to Duke, Pickens served as CEO of the American Lung Association of Missouri. Pickens also served as a director for a health plan operated by BJC Health System and Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis. Prior to her transition into healthcare, Pickens spent more than 12 years working in corporate America in a variety of management capacities.

Pickens received her Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Clark University in Worcester, Mass., and her Master of Healthcare Administration degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo. She completed an administrative fellowship at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Mich.

“I am honored to serve in this role alongside all of our great team members, a remarkable faculty and our outstanding leader, Dr. Kastan,” Pickens said. “I look forward to dynamic collaborations with colleagues within the DCI and across all of Duke Medicine.”

Pickens will have responsibility for all administrative functions within DCI as well as serving as the lead academic and clinical service line administrator. She will also serve as associate dean in the Duke University School of Medicine.
