Welcome to Down Home: The Cantata Website
We are pleased to welcome you to the Down Home: Cantata website! The cantata is an original musical score by Alejandro Rutty, featuring historic audio recordings from the Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina’s archives. Commissioned by Eric Meyers, with the sponsorship of the Bernice and Morton Lerner Endowment in Judaic Studies at Duke University, the cantata brings to life Jewish voices of the South.

The world premiere of an original composition by Alejandro Rutty featuring historic audio-recordings of testimonials by Jewish North Carolinian residents from the Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina. Performed by the Triangle Jewish Chorale, soloists and orchestra. Directed by Lorena Guillén.
All performances are free and open to the general public.
Images from the “Down Home: Jewish Life in North Carolina” exhibit – which traveled extensively throughout North Carolina. Audio recordings from the archival holdings of the Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina will be played throughout the Cantata performance.
