6:00 – 6:15 p.m. Registration & Opening Remarks

Senator Floyd McKissick Jr. will begin the evening with opening remarks. Participants may also register for Symposium activities at this time.
6:15 – 7:15 p.m. Documentary Screening & Panel Discussion

Following Senator McKissick’s remarks, a preview of a new documentary film will launch the symposium. The documentary by local filmmaker Ryan Richards focuses on the experiences of Shawn Massey and Scott Pierpoint, both of whom were exonerated in 2010 with the help of the Duke Law Wrongful Convictions Clinic and the Duke Innocence Project after serving lengthy prison terms for crimes they did not commit.
Both Massey and Pierpoint will be in attendance at the screening and will participate in a panel discussion after the film screening with their attorneys, Jim Coleman and Theresa Newman. A brief break and refreshments will follow.
7:30 – 8:30 p.m. Collective Sun & Facilitated Discussion

We are honored to host the SpiritHouse production of “Collective Sun” : Reshape the Mo(u)rning,” a performance piece that explores the impact of prison and policing on North Carolina’s African American community. A facilitated discussion of these themes will follow the performance.
