Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of illness and death throughout the world and currently a leading cause of worldwide mortality. Unlike other common causes of mortality, the burden of COPD continues to increase with projections. The National Institutes of Health had predicted that COPD will be the third leading cause of mortality in the US by 2030, but the December 2010 “Deaths: Preliminary Data for 2008,” report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) confirm that COPD has already become the third leading cause of death in the U.S. for 2008.
