Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, NC

Shoreline erosion plagues North Carolina estuarine shores, impacting property owners, environmental managers, and businessmen. Many shoreline protection techniques exist, but which technique is the most beneficial?

While coastal armoring reduces wave energy and prevents on site erosion, it also reduces natural fishery and estuarine habitats. To protect those habitats, natural habitat elements (i.e. oyster shells or submerged aquatic vegetation) can be
incorporated into stabilization structures.

This website addresses natural shoreline stabilization methods in North Carolina. Please explore the provided resources to determine if natural  stabilization is an option for you!
