The Three Gorges Dam and its Environmental Impact part1

The biggest engineering project of China after the build of the Great Wall

Three Gorges Dam is the world’s largest capacity hydroelectric dam located in the Yangtze River, which is the longest river in China.

The construction of dam was finished in 2006. The dam took 16 years to build, it is now the world’s largest capacity hydroelectric power station.

The dam is 2,335 m (7,661 ft) long, 181metres high and it’s able to hold the water level of 175 metres. The dam contains more than 39  km3 water with the water surface of 1,045 km².

It was designed to bring huge economic benefits by producing electricity, providing better water transportation and buffering annual flood.  The biggest environmental benefits it can bring to China is the reduce reliance on coal. Three Gorges reduces coal consumption by 31 million tonnes per year. By doing which, it reduces 100 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, millions of tonnes of dust, one million tonnes of one million tonnes of sulfur dioxide, 370,000 tonnes of nitric oxide, 10,000 tonnes of carbonmonoxide.
