Sustainable Management: Desertification

The United Nation Convention to Combat Desertification is an international group working to prevent environmental degradation in drylands. It requires nations where desertification is an issue to create National Action Plans to manage the problem.  These plans vary by region, but generally they include describe land-use practices that reduce the strain on areas that are at risk of desertification and allow natural processes of resilience to take effect. Programs that create market incentives for productive topsoil have been proposed but not implemented (Holtz 2007).
