Although the title of our trip is “Bayou Grace,” the name actually refers to our community partner: Bayou Grace Community Services. We’re living and working in Cocodrie, Louisiana, located along Bayou Petit Caillou in coastal Louisiana.
Throughout eight weeks, we will volunteer under the auspices of Bayou Grace, an organization whose mission is to create active partnerships among area leaders, organizations, schools, and other grassroots organizers in environmental outreach, community development and education.
We will also have the opportunity to affect the environmental health of coastal Louisiana, a region that experiences the highest rates of unnatural land loss in the world, as well as the opportunity to help provide hope and sustainability to local residents. We will be undertaking a variety of activities ranging from marsh restorative efforts to youth environmental educational programming at Smithridge Day Camp.
