Last Saturday we took part in a workshop about saltwater marshes, held at LUMCON. Following a lecture on marshes by researcher Alex Kolker, we went out on the Acadiana, one of LUMCON’s research vessels. And we saw dolphins!
Once we reached Terrebonne Bay, we ran a trawl net behind the boat for about 10 minutes. Then we pulled up the net (see video) to take a look at what critters were swimming in the water column. Here’s video of a pufferfish that we caught:
- A shrimp boat
- Trawling behind the boat
- Checking out the contents of the trawl net
- A shrimp
- The contents of the trawl net
- Crab, with a speared fish
- Checking out the contents of the trawl net
- Squid
- Ali got inked on by the squid!
- Checking out the contents of the trawl net
- Nils with his indestructible camera
- Ali on the pontoon boat
- Murt telling us about saltwater marshes
- Exploring the marsh
- Getting off the pontoon boat
- Spartina, a type of marsh grass

That looks like it was a great trip out! Any idea how much ink the squid can produce in CC’s?
