The Morganza Spillway has just been opened. However, it will take several days for the water to move down the Atchafalaya River Basin and out to the Gulf. Here is a map showing the timeline of water movement. One of the main worries is backwater flow, which you can see is when the water flows backwards into low-lying areas, in the opposite direction of the primary flow. Our program site (near Chauvin, LA) lies in the cyan-colored region– the water will take at least 6 days to get there, if it gets there at all.
