A New Map of Africa (1721)

John Senex [1]: A New Map of Africa (1721)

-map divides up the “countries” of Africa into large areas without any real delineation or boundaries between countries

-“countries” are outlined in various colors: the names of the areas are “Terra Nigrata” (Negroland), “Nubia”, “Habissinia”

-Senex’s map is not accurately detailed: labels and features of the time were not confirmed during the early 18th century

-cartouche reflects the British explorers’ and cartographers’ view of the exotic nature of Africa

-Senex has direct ties to the monarch: “geographer to the king,” “Geographers to the Queen”
