This website examines the the interactions between British politics and exploration in Africa in the 18th century. Our research shows that while exploration at this time was highly motivated by factors as intellectual curiosity and personal advancement, 18th century British exploration of Africa would ultimately be closely tied to politics; while the feasibility of exploration depended upon political connections and processes, the accounts and maps that it produced reflected current political situations, and even influenced future British political action and thought. This can be seen through the interactions and publications of British sponsors, explorers, and cartographers.
