Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. Raymond Odierno will discuss national security and military affairs Friday, April 11, at Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy.

The talk takes place at 11:30 a.m. in Sanford 04 and is free and open to the public. Parking is available in Bryan Center parking deck and the Science Drive Visitors lot.  Please join us for a reception in Fleishman Commons following his talk at 12:30 p.m. and reconnect with fellow alumni.

In a conversation with Peter Feaver, professor of political science and public policy, Odierno will discuss issues such as major security challenges in the near future and the lessons of the 13 years of war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Gen. Odierno has served in demanding assignments before — he was the ground commander for the Iraq surge — but he has never had a portfolio as daunting as his current one: helping the U.S. Army recover from the strain of a dozen-plus years of high-tempo conflict, and adjust to the rapidly shifting geostrategic environment,” Feaver said. “It will be interesting to hear firsthand his vision for the Army and his roadmap for getting there.”

A graduate of West Point with master’s degrees from N.C. State University and the Naval War College, Odierno has served in command positions around the world, including as battalion operations officer for the XVIII Airborne Corps Artillery at Fort Bragg, N.C. He was sworn in as the 38th Chief of Staff of the Army in Alumni Weekend AdSeptember 2011.

Odierno served in several positions during the Iraq War. He led Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2003 to 2004. From 2006 to 2008, he was commanding general of multinational forces and led the troop surge in Baghdad against counterinsurgency forces. He was also the commander of the U.S. Joint Forces Command in 2010-2011. As assistant to the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Odierno was the primary military adviser to Secretaries of State Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice.

The Ambassador Dave and Kay Phillips Family International Lecture is part of Duke Alumni Reunion Weekend programs and is sponsored by the Duke American Grand Strategy Program.
