Combining radar particle tracking that helps 'see' through opaque granular materials, DEM simulations equipped with coarse graining techniques and theoretical modeling, we show that, upon impact, disturbed granular materials follow a slow diffusive-convection process, giving rise to a characteristic length scale that is independent on impact velocity. Voronoi Tessellation (VT) is a widely used technique to allocate space according to the location of objects. However, standard VT may fail in case the objects are not spheres and not having the same size, see the bees for example. As an alternative, we showed that representing an object with a set of points instead of one in the center will lead to a more realistic space tiling, particularly for rod-shaped particles. About the PI

Kai HUANG (Dr. rer. nat. habil.) is currently associate professor of physics and chair of the division of natural and applied sciences (DNAS) at Duke Kunshan University (DKU). He did his PhD in physical acoustics at Nanjing University, and habilitation in physics at University of Bayreuth, where he is still co-affiliated.

He is interested in understanding, predicting and controlling the collective behavior of macroscopic particles (e.g., sand grains) from a fundamental perspective, in order to shed light on widespread applications ranging from space exploration through prevention of natural disasters to industrial processes.

In addition, he is also interested in the acoustical design of opera theatres, particularly comparing traditional European (e.g., the Bayreuth Festspielhaus of Richard Wagner and Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth, Germany) with Chinese opera theatres (e.g., Kun opera performing places), as an extension of his lecture on Acoustics.​
